Kyla, our granddaughter is our inspiration in life. As a result of complications from epilepsy and various related treatments – at seven years of age, she does not walk or speak.

The journey with Kyla has been anything but easy - in earlier years having to endure watching her suffer 300+ seizures in a day. Yet today here we are thanking our lucky stars for Kyla. This angelic child who has never uttered a word, has brought us so much and in turn responds to the love she feels in abundance from all of us. (When grandpa Chris tickles Kyla he is rewarded with a shy grin.)

Kyla now goes to school and we can tell from the uplift in her energy that she relishes the interaction with the other children. She is in the privileged position of being the only epileptic child in the class yet rather than her presence being disruptive - the other children are learning their own lessons from dealing with a child so different than they are.

We could not ever have imagined how our lives would improve so much and be so rewarded by having this sweet girl join us on earth. It is such a privilege to have Kyla at the center of our story - and it is this story that was the inspiration for both Kyla’s Quest and the Purple Hemp Co.

Olivia Newton John was diagnosed in 2017 with stage 4 breast cancer that had metastasized to her back. The Australia 60 Minutes show below is an interview with Olivia on her treatment which includes medical cannabis.

“Within 20 minutes (of using medical cannabis) she (Olivia Newton John) got a good result.” She also weaned herself off morphine thanks to cannabis as she states in the interview.

“You learn whether one or two drops is enough dosage. If I don’t take the drops I can feel the pain.”

“(Cannabis) also helps with anxiety and sleep.”

“The latest MRI’s show lesser number of tumours and the other ones are shrinking...” said John Easterling, Olivia’s husband. “Olivia’s energy levels are increasing, she’s walking and out shopping, it’s astonishing.”

Prof. Jonathan Cebon, from the Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Institute, described Newton-John as a 'trooper' and 'fighter' and is anticipating being able to begin clinical trials on medical cannabis.


Five Whole Foods to Fight Allergy Symptoms

When our immune system reacts to pollens or dust in the air, or food particles in our diet, we refer to the reactive symptoms as “allergy” or “sensitivity.”

The sensitivity-allergy spectrum spans from annoying post nasal drip or sneezing to life threatening anaphylactic shock.

In simple terms - our immune system recognizes foreign invaders and releases chemicals to neutralize the reaction. We can support our immune system to do the job better with certain nutrient-rich foods.

1. MEDICINAL MUSHROOM - reishi, chaga, and cordyceps are examples of medicinal mushrooms that have numerous properties which aid in allergic reaction. Medicinal mushrooms are considered “liver tonic” in Chinese medicine because they metabolize excess histamine and have enzymatic, anti-inflammatory benefits. Mushrooms are a rich source of beta-glucans, a type of dietary fiber that activate killer-T-cell activity and other immune responses related to allergy.

2. ROSEHIP - is one of the richest sources of vitamin C complex, containing not only ascorbic acid but many synergistic bio-flavanoids as well. High vitamin C intake works as a natural antihistamine by inhibiting inflammatory cells from releasing histamine. Dried rosehip powder can be added to smoothies or jams or made into tea and sweetened with honey or dark agave syrup. (Thanks to the tartness of rosehip one of my favorite combinations is to mix it with sweet licorice root tea - see #4 below.)

3. BEE POLLAN - is loaded with concentrated nutrients - vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, fatty acids, antioxidants, as well as antiviral and anti-fungal properties. Bee Pollen is a rich source of B complex vitamins for our nervous system, carotenoids and vitamin C for our immune system, as well as phytochemicals to boost brain function. The anti-allergic benefits may be because of its ability to inhibit the activation of mast cells which are involved in the allergic process. Add a tablespoon or two to your cereal or yogurt for a delicious super-breakfast! Use with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as if you have allergy to bee stings.

4. LICORICE ROOT - is a naturally sweet-tasting root used in many Chinese and Ayurvedic remedies. Licorice root’s many benefits include it’s adaptagen properties which nourishes our adrenal glands and balances our nervous system. Our adrenal glands produce a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol regulation helps to neutralize allergic responses. Use with caution if you have high blood pressure. It can be taken in tincture form or tea, either hot or iced.

5. PROBIOTIC-RICH FOODS - promote immune system health in ways that are being discovered on a regular basis with the intense new studies of the microbiome. How they help is still being debated but there is very good evidence that they do, potentially by promoting the function of mucosal lining of the intestines and by hindering growth of pathogenic (bad) bacteria. A regular intake of sauerkraut and other fermented living veggies, home-made yogurt and kefirs, tempeh and miso may all be helpful in helping alleviate allergy symptoms.

Summerland Library presentation on cannabis for wellness

Earlier this month Kylas Quest and Purple Hemp Co. hosted a forum with special guest Jennifer Dunne, RN BSN at the Summerland Library. Jennifer is a specialist on pain management though the use of cannabis, cannabinoid therapeutics and Cannabis Nursing in Canada.
